Keep Fit for Pac Crest!

During the snowy winter months here in Sunriver, it’s easy to cozy up next to a fire with some hot chocolate and not venture out into the outdoors.  But, if you’re here and looking to keep yourself in shape or maybe just starting to prep for the big 20 year anniversary race, here are some ways you can do that in Central Oregon!

  • Gyms: Central Oregon has Crossfit places and plenty of other local gyms.  In Sunriver, there’s our own local Ambush Fitness.  Their website is www.ambushfitness.com, email ambushfitness@gmail.com, and their phone number is 541-848-8342  Keep warm and fit at Ambush Fitness!
  •  Cross Country/Nordic Skiing: Sunriver’s golf courses become fantastic routes for cross country skiing!  Mt. Bachelor also provides cross country skiing routes. If you don’t have your own gear, there are several shops in the Village at Sunriver that will rent you what you need.  Nordic skiing is a top tier manner for keeping fit in the winter months!
  • Running/Walking Paths: Even when the snow falls, sometimes the nest way to keep in shape for a run is to run.  Sunriver works hard to keep their paved paths plowed when the rest of the world is covered in the white stuff.  Watch for ice and dress appropriately, but be assured, you can get out there are practice even during winter.
  •  Sage Springs Spa, Club, and Gym: Sunriver Lodge runs this upscale, fully staffed Spa.  Tennis, gym and full spa offerings are available.  Massages are always great after a workout or just to loosen up.  Check out their lineup at http://www.sunriver-resort.com/spa/oregon-spa-resorts.

Never give up!  There’s always a way to keep yourself ready for the PacCrest!  We’ll see you in June!

Posted on Updated on

If you’re planning on staying in Sunriver for the Pac Crest Weekend, lodging is getting fairly scarce.  Each vacation rental company is down to less than 20 homes!  Our partner company, Cascara Vacation Rentals, only has about 15.  Make sure and grab yours before they’re gone, because the final last minute bookings we’re told happen this weekend!  Stay Local, friends!  We’re honored to be hosted in Sunriver and we’d be honored if you’d support them!  See you on the course!

The Marathon and Half Marathon: Course Description

“Part of a weekend-long sports festival that takes place at the start of summer every year in the Sunriver Resort area, just east of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains, the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival Marathon & Half Marathon typically sees more than 1,300 finishers every year in the half marathon alone.

With its mix of long, flat stretches and occasional hills, the race a course that unfolds on scenic, wide paved bicycle paths, treating runners to views of the nearby Oregon forests, rivers and beautifully landscaped golf courses and vacation homes.

The race follows an out-and-back loop route that starts near the Sunriver Village at the corner of Beaver Drive and Abbott Drive, and takes runners on a counter-clockwise route around the resort and neighborhoods that surround it. The first couple of miles take runners northward along the bike paths that parallel Ponderosa and Beaver Drive, following the roads as they wind up toward North Imnaha Road, and then start heading west along Imnaha and East Cascade Road.

Once they’re around the northernmost section of the course along East Cascade, runners then start heading south, along the bike trails that follow the path of the winding Deschutes River through the Sunriver community.

The course remains on the path through the residential areas and along the edges of the Sunriver Airport, continuing to wind southward and meeting up with the river after participants turn off River Road near the airport and head west to the portion of the trail that skirts along the banks of the Deschutes.

This portion of the course takes the field all the way down to the stretch known as Lone Eagle Landing, and then begins heading back inland towards the residential neighborhoods and the Sunriver Meadows Golf Resort, which features four golf courses and a lake that runners pass along the portion of the route through the golf course. The final mile of the race takes runners into the Sunriver Village Mall area, where they’re greeted by thousands of spectators, friends and family as well as live music.

For runners or walkers who are interested in participating in any of the weekend’s other athletic events, there really is something for everyone at this race — the festival also includes two triathlon races, two duathlon races, a 5K and 10K, a kids’ duathlon and a “kids dash” race. Participants need to be prepared for a high-elevation race, organizers add, as the elevation in Sunriver is about 4,000 feet above sea level.”

We’re excited to have Sunriver host the Pac Crest once again in 2015!  We hope you can join us!
